There are few pieces of furniture that have such a vast and eclectic choice of styles as the humble sofa. Every home has one, and they come in so many shapes and styles that whatever your own personal taste, and however your home is decorated, there is a sofa to suit you and your needs.
The definition of a sofa is a long seat with a back and arms, but this simple premise has been taken by designers over the years and turned into pieces of furniture that are not only functional but also a fashion statement. It’s not only the styles that have changed, but also the fabrics they are made from. At one time all sofas were leather, and while this is still popular, they are now made from all manner of fabrics.
The vintage square style that was the norm in the Victorian era and the first part of the 20th century was practical but not exactly comfortable. Over time the lines became softer with curves appearing on the back and the arms, making them aesthetically a lot more appealing. This evolved into bigger, softer cushioning and an altogether more casual look with the emergence of a more spacious 3 seater sofa which remain the most popular today.
.
Sofas also became more elongated, then curves in the middle were introduced which then changed to right angles and the corner sofa was born. The list of sofa styles now is endless, as designers have come up with ever more creative names to describe them. Standard, floppy, curved, corner, curved, uniform, square backed, the list goes on.
They are all self explanatory with little tweaks here and there to make them stand out and appeal to the consumer. As sofas are an essential item in every home, you can bet that although it seems as if the sofa can go no further, designers will have something else up their sleeve.
